DIY Beauty With Beauty Coco: The Best Essential Oils for Skin and Hair

Two of the most popular ingredients on the beauty market right now have to be coconut oil and essential oils. Of course, coconut oil has so many uses for hair and skin it’s practically mind-boggling. And while essential oils have powerful beauty benefits too, there are some important things to know before you get started whipping up your own DIY beauty recipes.

Let's Talk About Essential Oils.

These oils are literally selling like Tupperware with essential oil parties being a total thing now that natural beauty has solidified its space in the beauty market. But what’s not always talked about is how powerful these oils are and the care that is needed in handling them.

Essential oils are obtained from a variety of plants through different means of extraction and contain that plant’s essence. Each plant’s essence has a unique scent and flavor. It also has a variety of properties which are commonly utilized in beauty, aromatherapy, and certain issues of the body, like easing pain.

All great things. But what you may not know is that they can also have more powerful effects. Essential oils are highly concentrated and potent. Some have the ability to influence hormonal function, others can burn or irritate the skin, and others can cause allergic type reaction.

It's Important to Dilute Essential Oils.

While these reactions tend to vary from person to person, did you know that the majority of essential oils should not be applied to the skin undiluted? It’s true! With the exception of lavender and tea tree, two EOs that can be used on the skin undiluted, all essential oils should be added to a carrier oil before application. Also note that citrus oils – lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, and bergamot – are considered photosensitive and can cause the skin to be more sensitive to UV rays.

Because potent essential oils can be inhaled and absorbed through the skin, caution should be taken when using them while pregnant or nursing. In these cases, always consult your physician before use.

Know Your EOs: Beauty Coco + Essential Oils Meet DIY Beauty

As with all cosmetic ingredients, the quality of essential oils varies. Purchasing your oils from a reputable source ensures you are using the purest oils. Aura Cacia essential oils are a good place to start and can be found at most Whole Foods stores.

Before you get elbow deep in essential oils on your DIY beauty endeavor, let’s talk carrier oils. There are several that work like a dream for skin and hair. Coconut oil is one of the most popular carrier oils because it is well suited to all skin types, antibacterial, and non-greasy. Plus, it works well on face, hair, and body. ST. TROPICA Beauty Coco is the perfect choice for all of your DIY beauty recipes. Sweet almond, olive, and jojoba are also good carrier oil options.

There are many essential oils to choose from but here we will focus on the best essential oils for hair and skin that are easy to use in DIY beauty.

Lavender Oil

As stated above, lavender is one essential oil that is safe for use undiluted. Still, if you have sensitive skin or a sensitivity to lavender essential oil be sure to add to a carrier oil before use. Lavender has a soothing effect on the senses and makes skin look calm, clear, and balanced. Perfect for those dealing with irritation or acne.

Rose Oil

This beauty is ideal for those with sensitive skin. It gives the complexion a calm and radiant appearance and softens the look of lines and wrinkles. Mix two drops into a carrier oil and apply to skin nightly.

Rosemary Oil

Great for making hair look strong and healthy, mix a few drops of rosemary oil into coconut or jojoba oil and massage through to ends. Wrap in a towel and allow oils to remain on hair for up to 30 minutes. May also be used as an overnight treatment.

Lemongrass Oil

This freshly scented oil is not only a mood booster but has natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Mix a few drops into coconut oil and massage onto scalp to improve the look of dandruff and flaking.

Cumin Seed Oil

Perk up your mood and give skin the look of balance and clarity at the same time with this essential oil. Add two drops of cumin oil to Beauty Coco for acne prone skin or mix in five to six drops to rub onto sore muscles.

Carrot Seed Oil

The orange hue gives skin a healthy glowing appearance and the oil visibly improves skin elasticity and firmness. Add a few drops to Beauty Coco and apply as a facial moisturizer.

Jasmine Oil

The lovely floral fragrance pleases the senses. Delicate jasmine oil is a good option for moisturizing dry hair. Add a few drops to your hair conditioner or Beauty Coco for a customized DIY coconut oil hair mask.

Tea Tree Oil

Men tend to love tea tree for its earthy scent. This oil is also great for diminishing the appearance of acne breakouts and dandruff, and soothing irritated skin. Add a drop directly to blemishes for a spot treatment and dilute for a scalp soother.

That should get you started on your way with essential oils and DIY beauty. Don’t be afraid to combine a couple of drops of your favorite two or three essential oils into a carrier oil for a custom blend.
